EVs as a Service
Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) has begun the implementation of a multi-year 'EV as a Service' contract with the delivery of the first set of EVs. According to HDOT, the first batch will include 10 EVs. One has been delivered to State Highways and another to the Hawaii State Energy Office. Another 34 EVs will be delivered by the end of May. This is all part of an effort to electrify the State's fleet of 300 light-duty vehicles.
“The EV as a service contract allows HDOT and other interested state and county agencies to procure EVs and charging infrastructure on a per mile cost basis. Use of this service contract is expected to save approximately 75-percent in vehicle maintenance over the lifespan of the vehicle and an average of $287 per vehicle per year in fuel costs.” - HDOT
From the press release, it appears that the first EV delivered was a Tesla Model Y.
Hawaii EV is enthusiastic about this development. The electrification of our State's fleet will allow it to lead the way - it will inspire fleet owners to do the same, expand our charging infrastructure, and help State employees to experience the wonder of the EV and convince them to make their next car electric!
Importantly, the ‘EV as a Service’ contract strategy may allow us to expand our pre-owned EV inventory - we speculate that the EVs will be cycled out of the program after a period of use and be made available on the used car market.
