As gas prices surge, a new tool shows Hawaiʻi’s higher-mileage drivers can save $3,000 a year by switching to electric vehicles

Cost Savings Index calculates electric vehicle savings based on each driver’s mileage, vehicle, and current state gasoline/electricity prices

With high gas prices at the pump, the national nonprofit group Coltura released new state-level data for Hawaiʻi showing drivers could save thousands of dollars by switching to an electric vehicle.

The organization’s Weekly EV Cost Savings Index shows that the average Hawaii driver who puts 15,000 miles per year on their automobile would save more than $1,800 annually on fuel and maintenance combined, and a high-mileage driver at 25,000 miles would save $3,000 every year. All told, the Savings Index shows that Hawaiʻi drivers could save 12 cents per mile on fuel and maintenance savings by switching to an electric vehicle under current gas prices.

The Index shows savings per mile, per trip, and per month. Coltura updates the tool weekly, so the figures always reflect current local gas and electricity prices. The savings from switching to an EV depend on the number of miles driven and whether the owner is driving a car or an SUV/truck.

Hawai’i EV Cost Savings Index:

Why Right Now Matters

The war in Iran has sent gasoline prices up more than 30 percent since late February, with experts warning that prices will remain elevated for quite a while. The EV Cost Savings Index quantifies that advantage by state and driving habits.

What the Tool Does

The EV Cost Savings Index allows users to:

  • Select their state to reflect local gas and electricity rates.

  • Choose their vehicle type — car or SUV/truck — for a side-by-side comparison.

  • Set their annual mileage using a simple slider.

  • Toggle between fuel savings only or fuel and maintenance combined.

  • See savings broken down by mile, trip, and month.

“With gas prices rising, drivers are right to ask whether an EV could protect them from the volatility. The answer is yes — and the savings depend on how much you drive, what vehicle you drive, and where you live. We built this tool so any driver can enter their own information and see exactly what they’d save, based on what they’re actually paying right now.”

— Janelle London, Co-Executive Director, Coltura

“Hawaiʻi drivers are now paying an average of $5.65 per gallon for gas, second only to California. I've driven an EV since 2011, through several oil price surges, and my per-mile cost has held steady. I've also benefited from low maintenance costs. Every driver deserves to see how much they can save by switching to an electric vehicle. This tool shows them.”
