Hawaii is Getting Another NEVI Fast Charger. Good News for Maui EV Drivers!

Hawaiʻi is adding another essential piece to its fast-charging network – a DC Fast Charging Hub at Kapalua Airport on Maui. This will be the third fast charging hub funded through the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program. It follows the NEVI hubs at the Kahului Park and Ride on Maui and the Aloha Tower Marketplace on Oʻahu. This addition is welcome in West Maui and will support residents and visitors alike.

Kahului Park and Ride Hub on Maui

According to HDOT, crews will begin work on Monday, November 24, 2025, to construct the new EV charging hub in the Kapalua Airport parking area. The chargers are scheduled to be available in September 2026. (We hope that this is a very conservative estimate, given the construction period for the first two NEVI hubs.)

As with the other NEVI hubs, this will include four 150-kilowatt DC fast charging units equipped with CCS and CHAdeMO adaptors. (Expect NACS connectors to be installed as these are now available for the Tritium equipment that will be installed.)

Hawaiʻi’s NEVI Network

The Kapalua Airport station will be the third NEVI-funded site in Hawaiʻi. It will follow the Kahului Park and Ride hub, which opened in February 2024, and the Aloha Tower Marketplace hub, deployed in November 2024.

The HDOT NEVI roadmap extends into 2027, with the deployment of Fast Chargers at eleven additional locations, according to the HDOT September 2025 program update.

Here are the future hub locations:

  • Oceanview, Hawaii (FY 2027)

  • Volcano Village, Hawaii (FY 2027)

  • Hana, Maui (FY 2027+)

  • Lanai City, Lanai (FY 2027+)

  • Kaunakakai, Molokai (FY 2027+)

  • Hilo, Hawaii (FY 2026)

  • Waimea, Hawaii (FY 2026)

  • Kona, Hawaii (FY 2026)

  • Princeville, Kauai (FY 2026)

  • Mililani, Oahu (FY 2026)

  • Port Allen, Kauai (FY 2026)

Hawaii’s NEVI DC Fast Charging network will contribute significantly to our growing network of DC Fast Chargers, including those deployed by Hawaiian Electric, Tesla, and Electrify America. These chargers can add over 100 miles of range in 10-30 minutes, depending on the equipment's power output.

We Need Level 2 Charging Too!

Of course, faster is not always ideal. In many locations, extended dwell times with slower charging stations are preferred. These locations include shopping centers, restaurants, movie theaters, sports facilities, and workplaces, where cars are expected to be parked for extended periods. In these situations, Level 2 chargers are ideal. These add around 25 miles of range per hour.

Mahalo!

Hawaiʻi EV extends congratulations and mahalo to HDOT Highways, federal partners, and the contractors and crews who will deliver this project. This investment will contribute to a much-needed statewide backbone of fast chargers that will serve residents, local businesses, and our visitor industry.

We will continue to track NEVI-funded sites and other public charging investments around the state. As more details on construction progress and opening dates become available, we will share updates with our members and followers.
