A gasoline superuser can save thousands each year with an EV.

A recent study by the Ulupono Initiative found that a small fraction of Hawaii's drivers account for a quarter of the gasoline consumed each year. This suggests we can make immediate progress in reducing our dependence on gasoline imports, reducing emissions and local air pollution, and saving residents money by focusing on these drivers.

Here are some highlights from the study:

💡Superusers drive around 40,000 miles annually (4-5 times the average!)

💡There are about 65,000 superusers statewide, representing 6.8% of drivers. Most are, not surprisingly, on Hawaii Island.

💡They use over 25% of the state's gasoline.

💡They spend over $13,000 each year on gas. Switching to an EV can save them up to $5,300/year on fuel.

Less than 10% of Hawaii's drivers use over 25% of the States gasoline!

How do we leverage this?

👉 Provide high-mileage drivers with education and awareness about EV benefits, charging, buying and financing strategies, and vehicles that meet their driving needs.

👉 Expand Level 2 and DC Fast Charging infrastructure along superuser corridors, rural areas, and employment areas.

👉 Create state and county incentives to enable EV purchases by low-to-moderate-income households with high-mileage drivers..

The upcoming legislative session offers our leaders the opportunity to enable changes that can have a dramatic impact on Hawaii's clean energy and transportation goals. With heavy demand for limited resources, a targeted investment in transitioning gasoline superusers is a smart move.
