Look ma, no cord

Wireless (inductive) charging continues to evolve. Several manufacturers have been piloting wireless charging. BMW, Jaguar, Renault, and Ford are examples.

Wireless charging companies like Plugless Power, WiTricity, and WAVE offer solutions for electric vehicles. Some of them offer solutions for large trucks and buses.

The concept simplifies the vehicle charging experience. You merely park and charge - no plug required. As you can imagine, this greatly enhances the experience at home and at a public charging station. There is no need to deal with the charging cable and adapters. The charging time will be influenced by the distance between car’s receiver and the charging equipment’s transmitter, as well as the station’s power supply.

This WiTricity video explains the concept well.

WiTricity on wireless charging

The preceding covers what is referred to as “static wireless charging.” Another form of this technology is “dynamic wireless charging.” This allows EVs to charge while driving over specially configured roadways. A relevant project in Michigan involves configuring a mile of roadway to test this technology.
