Hawaii EV Talk Story August 2021 - Hawaii Energy’s EV Charger Rebate

This is a recording of Hawaii EV's August 28 'Talk Story,’ a session dedicated to Hawaii Energy’s Electric Vehicle Charging Station Rebate Program. Guests include Hawaii Energy’s Noreen Reimel and Desiree Sumaoang, and Jim Burness of Aloha Charge. Attendees Shawn Moorehead of EverCharge and Hawaii County Council member, Heather Kimball, also contributed to our discussion.

Noreen and Desiree shared the history of the program, the funding mechanism, and the program details, including eligibility and the application process. Jim and Shawn discussed installation details, logistics, and siting considerations. Heather shared details of the work to enforce the EV parking and charging law (HRS section 291-71) at the county level.

The EV Charging Station Rebate Program provides Hawaii commercial sites - businesses, condos, workplaces, government, etc.… with generous rebates for the installation of Level 2 and DC Fast Chargers:

  • New Level 2 Station with 2 ports - $4,500 per networked station

  • Retrofit Level 2 Station with 2 ports - $3,000 per networked station

  • New DC Fast Charger - $35,000 per networked station

  • Retrofit DC Fast Charger - $35,000 per networked station

The barrel tax funds the rebate program (thanks to Representative Lowen’s HB 1142 legislation/Act 75, which was signed into law this year ). Rebates are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Additional funding is available for Level 2 stations in affordable housing properties.
