 A Key to EV Adoption

One of the key things holding back the adoption of electric vehicles in Maui County is insufficient public charging stations. In order to increase adoption, charging stations are needed in locations that are convenient for those who don’t have access to home charging, e.g. those in multi-family residential buildings, apartments, and condos. Maui Nui EV works with State and County government, property owners and the EV charging industry to improve public charging and to make it affordable, reliable and convenient for all residents and visitors to drive electric.

Updates September 18:

Many are asking what rebates are available from the federal government and the State for purchasing an EV or an EV charging station.

The federal Inflation Reduction Act will pay up to 30% of the cost of a charging station, including a DC Fast Charger, in lower income areas. It will pay $3,750 if the vehicle is made with a battery manufactured or assembled in North America + $3,750 if the battery is constructed with critical minerals extracted in the US.

The 2022 legislature made the Hawai‘i EV charging station rebates permanent as a portion of the barrel tax. However, the Hawaii Energy site says that the funds have not been released yet at so check back soon.

The Maui County Council will on September 20 receive a proposal for a bill to require significantly more charging stations on large public parking lots. It is modeled on bill 120 in Hawai‘i County.

There is also a proposal for EV-readiness in new construction, both residential and commercial, being discussed in the CARE committee as part of revising the County Energy Code by the end of the year.
